| <span style="font-size:large">'''■ Commentary on the recorded data by Idecs' Mitsuru Sakaue'''</span>
For me, Pat Metheny's music is something that I can only say that I want to continue to listen to as a listener. Therefore, I feel guilty when it comes to things like copying and analyzing songs, but this time I inadvertently dared to break that taboo with this SMF music data. I tried to convert Pat's guitar solos and each player's performances into music data as accurately as possible, but for parts that I simply couldn't discern by ear, I thoroughly checked and analyzed my personal collection of treasured videos, bootleg CDs, etc. Anyway, I feel like I've accomplished everything that can be expressed with a single SC-55.

Due to voice reserve issues, I ended up using a lot of program changes, making it nearly impossible to play back from the middle of the songs. Please be aware of this.

I hope this music data will be useful, not only for listening purposes, but also as a reference for phrase analysis and sequencing studies.

Finally, I would appreciate it if you could send me your opinions and impressions after listening to this music data.

| '''For SC-88 and SC-88Pro users'''
If you are playing back on a SC-88VL or SC-88Pro, please be sure to set it to "SC-55 MODE" first. After that, feel free to change the tones and use insertion effects, etc, and have fun. With the SC-88Pro, I think it would be better to replace the drums ''STANDARD 1'' with ''STANDARD 3'', ''Acoustic Bass'' with ''Wild A.Bass'' and ''Piano'' with ''Piano w''. Additionally, for guitars and bass, the ''Cut off'' is set relatively low, so please adjust that to your liking.
| '''1) Have You Heard'''
| '''1) Have You Heard'''
At first glance, it doesn't sound like it's in an odd time signature, but it's actually based on a 7/4 pattern. The piano voicings had to be changed, albeit reluctantly, due to the number of notes involved. The original piece is actually a sequenced track, incorporating a variety of programmed sounds in addition to live instrumentation.

|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''2) Last Train Home'''
French HornはFr.
| '''2) Last Train Home'''
Despite being composed of only five notes, the melody line is incredibly compelling. For the electric sitar sound, the ''Fretless Bass'' tone is used. By slightly raising the ''Resonance'', it simulates the distinctive droning string sound of the sitar. The ''Jazz Gt'' tone is used to reinforce the attack. For the SC-88Pro, it might be better to adjust the ''Cut Off'' to be a bit brighter. I think ''Fr. Horn 2'' is better for ''French Horn'', and ''Soft Brass'' is better for ''Synth Brass''. However, beyond the melody, Pat's solo is exceptionally well-performed, singing beautifully. Playing it in real time, I found myself moved to tears around measure 113.

|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''3) The First Circle'''

| '''3) The First Circle'''
The basic pattern of this song is 6/4 + 5/4 = 11/4 time signature. The original piece is synchronized (with the tempo remaining constant throughout), which is hard to believe. I think Lyle Mays' piano solo on this song is probably one of his best takes, but it took me a lot of time to recreate his signature groove. The nylon string guitar you hear from the left is Pedro Aznar, and the steel string on the right is Pat, but the voicing has been changed slightly due to the number of notes.

|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''4) James'''

| '''4) James'''
A very popular song from ''Off Ramp'' released in 1981. I'm not sure how many times the guitar is layered, but transcribing it was certainly challenging.

Regarding Lyle Mays' piano solo:

His piano playing simply cannot be quantized, so I practiced desperately. I want you to listen for the subtle delays and lag.

| '''5) Phase Dance (''Travels'' version)'''

| '''5) Phase Dance (''Travels'' version)'''
This is from the live album ''Travels'' released in 1983. At this time, like ''Phase Dance'', it was Danny Gottlieb on drums and Naná Vasconcelos on percussion. The chord changes are perfect for soloing, and since it's a live performance, it's an intensely energic performance. The enthusiastic audience is a bonus. In reality, Metheny plays two types of guitars. The cluster sound heard on Bm11, described as "jang", is the harmonics of the guitar and Lyle Mays' autoharp.

|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''6) Third Wind'''

| '''6) Third Wind'''
This song was the most challenging. An elaborate composition that transitions from a samba feel to African beats to a 4-beat rhythm. The carefully calculated foreshadowing is amazing. In the middle part of the song, you can hear subtle overtones. In order to reproduce these overtones as MIDI data, I tried playing the marimba with a slightly unusual sequence of notes. The triplet phrases for pipes and vocals are structured as "three triplets in groups of four", foreshadowing for the second half of the piece. The number of sounds used is enormous (about 30 instruments, and over 30 percussion sounds!!). In the GR-300 solo in the second half, an overdubbed (synth) brass section appears. Quite the ordeal, this one...

|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''7) Letter From Home'''

| '''7) Letter From Home'''
I want to conclude with a melancholy ballad. A nylon guitar is used instead of a soprano guitar. The dynamics of the backing synth strings are exquisite, but the music data uses three parts. The faintly heard synth horn is beautiful.
| '''Introduction'''
The song begins quietly and slowly with a high-pitched bassoon solo. In the original piece, the contrapuntal movement of the woodwinds continues for a while, but the timbre is changed by using a contrabass instead of the bass clarinet, and by substituting a xylophone for the clarinet's small movements. Also, if you look at the score at the end of the song, where the tutti rises (measures 63 to 67 in the data - all measures are the same), each part has a very delicate counterpoint. It moves, but if you play it with the specified sound, it becomes a mushy sound. Therefore, tones such as xylophone and glockenspiel are used to prevent this from happening.
I believe that by making the gate time a little longer and shifting the clock slightly, I was able to enhance the eerie power of the strong staccato at the beginning and the cacophony of the accented brass, which sounds like a devil's scream.
| '''Ritual of Abduction'''
I would like you to take a look at, for example, channel 1 (first violin) in the tutti part between bars 52 and 56, but in order to create the feeling of the bow being pulled down quickly, you can use an expression to instantly change the sound from 127 to 52. I'm reducing the amount. Due to the processing power of the sound source, it's a bit of a rough way of lowering it...
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''Spring Rounds'''
It continues seamlessly with the previous song through the flute trill. Open channel 6 just at the boundary (measure 67). That's the flute data. Originally it is in 4/4 time, but it is now in 8/2 time. This is because tempo control alone cannot provide enough pauses. That's why there are 192 trills in just that one measure.
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
|colspan="2"| <span style="font-size:large">'''1-3: SMC06_03.MID'''</span>
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''Ritual of the Rival Tribes'''
What you should pay attention to is channel 12 (timpani) from measures 40 to 61. This is a sound that has no trace or shape in the original score - in other words, I added it on my own. However, I am proud of myself for saying that this is so effective, and even think that it should definitely be added to the original song.
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''Procession of the Sage'''
Unless you have seen the score, you will not be able to tell the difference between this song and the previous song. The song progresses using a fusion of 6/4 time and 4/4 time, with the percussion instruments taking charge of the 4/4 time signature. It sounds thick, but if you type in two measures, you can copy the rest. It's the only song that made me happy.
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''The Kiss of the Earth'''
It's only 4 measures long, but please pay attention to the change in the volume of the strings in the 4th measure (100 measures). All controls are controlled by inputting expression data. The song's theme is definitely "The Kiss of the Earth".
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''Dance of the Earth'''
This is data that I really like. As for the input, I didn't have much trouble since most of the sounds were staccato, but it was a little difficult to balance each part from the 125th to the final measure with the pitch of the bass.
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''Introduction'''
It was this "overture" that I struggled with the most. To begin with, the original song is very plain, and it's not interesting to listen to it while watching a ballet, but it's not very interesting to appreciate purely as music (at least that's how I feel). So after much trial and error, I decided to take the plunge and completely replace the tones. For example, the original song begins with a cacophony of three flutes playing one after the other, but I took out only the top note and played it with a xylophone tremolo, and used many sparkling tones such as glockenspiel and tube label. After much effort and misery, I tried to make it so that it wouldn't be a pain to listen to. Therefore, I would like you to listen to this part and compare it with the original song.
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''Mystic Circles of the Young Girls'''
This song has a slow tempo and is legato, and uses expressions a lot to control the volume. If you try watching any channel, you'll notice that most of the screen is filled with expression data. Note data are like small islands scattered in the ocean, and it can be quite difficult to find them. This type of song is the most difficult to create.
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
|colspan="2"| <span style="font-size:large">'''2-2: SMC06_05.MID'''</span>
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''Glorification of the Chosen One'''
At this point, the energy that had been suppressed in the previous two songs suddenly explodes. From the last 6 bars of the previous song, the last part of the song begins to accelerando and cresce into the main song with great force, as if a dynamite fuse has been lit. My mental state while creating the data was completely in sync with the music. In the middle of the song (measures 42 to 50), I switch banks and put "Punch" on channel 2 and "Screaming" on channel 3, but this is just for fun. However, I really like it.
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''Evocation of the Ancestors'''
This is a tremendous fanfare for summoning the "Emperor of the Demon World" rather than an "ancestor". In the score, it has a 3/2 time signature, but the tempo is too fast for the computer to handle, so I cut the tempo in half and use a 3/4 time signature instead.
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''Ritual Action of the Ancestors'''
What is noteworthy is that there is a bar (138 bars) in which 650 "tadpoles" are crowded together in all parts. 650 notes in just one measure! — It can only be described as madness. If you open one channel, you'll see that there are 72 note data lined up.
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
|colspan="2"| <span style="font-size:large">'''2-3: SMC06_06.MID'''</span>
|- style="vertical-align:top;"
| '''Sacrificial Dance'''
It is a magnificent scale that is suitable for the end of this great song. As for data entry, it was already difficult. This is because the time signature of "Festival" usually changes rapidly throughout the song, but it is especially severe in this last song, where the time signature changes almost every bar, making it difficult to use copy and other commands. It's from. If you open a track named Master or Conductor, you'll immediately notice the unusual time signature change.
| This song's most distinctive feature is its "shirring style," which involves chords within the octave. The keyboard provides the main melody, so keyboardists should definitely give it a try.
| This is one of Cassiopeia's signature numbers, and we usually play it at the end of our concerts. The melody line really captures our Japanese flavor, so overseas, it seems to be known as "Asayake = Sukiyaki."
| As the name suggests, this is a highly acrobatic number with a "domino effect" in the middle. It features live performances, so there are bass and drum solos. The song and score are both long, so be careful not to strain your neck.
With his exceptional technique and chord work that makes abundant use of original tones, he has produced numerous hit songs. His catchy melody lines stand out even among Casiopea's music, adding an essential element to their appeal. In 1985, he released his solo album, "Minoruland." In 1993, he released "Tickle the Ivory", featuring guests Masayoshi Takanaka, Akira Jimbo, and Tetsuo Sakurai, utilizing synthesizers and a Macintosh.

Always incorporating cutting-edge technology and creating innovative works, he is a pioneer in Japan, competing for the top spot. He also serves as the MC at live shows, gaining popularity for his comical and skillful speaking skills. In 1988, he even served as an FM radio personality, a skill that rivals that of an MC.

He is known for his diverse hobbies outside of music, and has recently expanded into the multimedia field, appearing on the CX late-night program "Mr. Watson." He has been active in a wide range of performances and events. In 1989, he composed the music for the game "2," and continues to actively explore new horizons. His gentle appearance and approachable, unique personality make him popular among women, and he is also an idol for keyboardists.
Music data for 6 songs that demonstrate advanced MIDI programming techniques that use the Roland SC-8850 sound source to the fullest. In addition, 9 MIDI files with drum phrases are included. The drumming is performed on a Roland V-Drum kit by [[Steven G. Fisher]] and illustrates how life-like drumming can be re-created in MIDI with nuanced use of timing and velocity to achive details such as snare ghost notes or hi-hat and cymbal articulations. The CD also features Red Book audio tracks with SC-8850 renditions of the song files and three of the drum files.

The original title of the release is "''SC-8850徹底活用シリーズVol.1''". The translation used here is unofficial, as no English source has been found.
}}
Music data for 5 guitar centric songs that demonstrate advanced MIDI programming techniques that use the Roland SC-8850 and SC-8820 sound sources to the fullest. In addition, 10 MIDI files with guitar phrases are included, illustrating how realistic guitar playing can be re-created in MIDI data.

The original title of the release is "SC-8850／SC-8820徹底活用シリーズVol.2　-ギター打ちこみ編-". The translation used here is unofficial, as no English source has been found.

Unlike previous Roland MIDI data that were packaged in a CD-sized jewel case, this product was sold in a cardboard box with a blank jewel case and a liner notes sheet inside. This release is also of significance to MIDI data epicureans because it is the last of Roland's self-produced MIDI programming of commercial music sold on physical media to the consumer market for listening purposes, marking the end of the golden era of MIDI data. The gap in the usually sequential product codes, with RJK-9902J missing, could indicate that other productions were cancelled before being finalised. Roland would still make material for educational, promo, demo, karaoke and play-along purposes in the following years, such as the VIMA Tunes series.
